AresBykes: Plastic Adjustable Spacer

Now this is an innovative and creative design for an everyday product. The architect in me loves this and the cyclist in me just keeps thinking “painted steerer”. These new AresBykes headset spacers use little interlocking notches to give you a few mm’s of adjustment. Available now through Brakeless. Thanks to FGS for the heads!

It’s Memorial Day

Today is the day we’re supposed to remember our fallen brethren by spending time with our friends and family. So do just that! Get outdoors, enjoy the weather and ride / relax!

Thanks to JP Elliot for the Prolly American Ax design!

Trackosaurus Rex: Criterium 75 Pinball Machine

If there’s one thing we can say about Tracko, it’s that his love for cycling is deep. Now with the Golden Saddle Cyclery open, he’s working on filling the shop with trinkets and do-dads that will give it an original feel. Leave it to him to find a Spanish pinball machine called the Criterium 75 on eBay. This thing looks amazing and hopefully I can make it into LA soon to check out the rest of the GSC. From the looks of their blog, they aren’t doing so bad!

Sawblade Smile: Volumes I – IV

When someone hits me up for my address, I never know what to expect. Chas from TCB Courier sent me an email the other week asking just that and when I got home from Boston, this was sitting on my desk waiting for me. Sawblade Smile is the TCB crew’s zine they compile every so often. It’s filled with photos, sketches and notes from their daily travels and adventures.

Check out more below!

*Edit: Please email Sawblade Smile SF for a copy, not TCB Courier!

Shop Visit: Repeat Press

Nestled in the back of the Fringe is Michael Dacey’s print shop, Repeat Press. Using old letter press machines and traditional print methods, Repeat Press continues what many would consider to be a lost art. Littered throughout the shop are drawers of typefaces, vintage machinery and loads of ink. I spent some time documenting the space as Michael was out to lunch.

Paper Fortress: 2009 – 2011 Reflection

My homie Stebs’ company Paper Fortress resides in the Fringe, a massive warehouse in Somerville filled with everything from framebuilders, to industrial designers, photographers, print shops and other creatives. We’ve seen his work before (linked below) and here’s his current reel, entitled 2009 – 2011 Reflection. You’ll recognize a lot of familiar faces in there…

Hypebeast: Shepard Fairey x Team RadioShack x Trek Madone 6.9 SSL Bike

I’m sure by now you’ve seen the latest from Shepard Fairey and his Studio Number One design team. This year, in preparation for the Tour of California, the wheat paste artist designed a special paint job for Team RadioShack’s Trek Madone 6.9 SSL bikes. Hypebeast sat down with Eric Bjorling of Trek for a Q&A session about working with Shepard Fairey and their bikes as a mobile art form. Check the interview out here.

Pave by Joan Sandoval

Pave is a new bike shop in Barcelona that was designed by Joan Sandoval. The shop includes back-lit displays, minimalist detailing, stark surfaces and all the high-end road hardware and soft-wear you’d ever want.

I don’t wanna steal Dezeen‘s thunder too much, so head over there and check out more of the amazing photos of the space!

Geoff McFetridge for Golden Saddle Cyclery

If you haven’t heard by now, you should know that Kyle Kelley, aka Juvi-Kyle, aka Tracko has opened a shop in Silverlake, Los Angeles called the Golden Saddle Cyclery. After years of working in the industry, Kyle decided it was best to open his own shop. So he, Woody and Ty have been working overtime trying to get the shop open and one of the keys to owning a legit business is legit branding, which is why GSC got linked up with Geoff McFetridge.

Check out more at Tracko (dude gets two plugs back to back here, so he must be doing something right!).

Also, be sure you read what Kyle had to say about Low Bicycles and the Low Track!

Red Bull Ride + Style San Francisco

If you guys aren’t coming to SF for the Red Bull Ride + Style, you’re missing out! Check out the latest from Red Bull:

“On April 30, San Francisco’s Justin Herman Plaza will serve as the setting for a collision of fixed gear biking and urban contemporary art, creating a visually exciting and awe-inspiring event called Red Bull Ride + Style.”

So far, the legitimacy of this event is unprecedented. I’m blown away at everything that’s going into it. Stoked!

The Toyota Prius Projects: Concept Bike Week 2

For decades, the design of the bicycle has stayed relatively the same: two wheels, a mechanism to propel said wheels and a steering column to navigate its path. While this description is very vague, the design and refinement of the bicycle has become very specialized over time. Road bikes, cross bikes and touring bikes all have specific design qualities: nuances that make them different. So where do you start when you’re working on a project with Toyota Prius Projects and Parlee Cycles? Both are known for their use of proprietary technology and innovation but how does that that translate into a frame design? Much less, an entire bicycle? Two weeks ago, I visited Parlee Cycles to document the design process of the concept bike build inspired by Prius innovations.
