Kinfolk: NYC Studios Open House

So stoked for the Kinfolk crew. I got to see this space and talk with Maceo and Ryan about it when they first signed the lease. Unfortunately, I wasn’t about to help them out with it since I was moving to Austin for the winter but it looks like they got it all situated!

This just in from the Kinfolk wire:

“As you may or may not know, Kinfolk is in the process of building our new studio in Brooklyn. For those who haven’t seen it yet, it’s an awesome space, and we have lot of great things planned for the property later this year, including the NY branch of the Kinfolk Bar & Lounge. It’s a big project, and a huge calling, but one we’re very excited about. In the meantime, we’re doing our best to open the doors to the public by March 1st.

We could use a little help from our friends to make this happen. It’s been a long and brutal winter, and it’s time we threw a party. So on Feb. 25th we’re having an Open house and Premiere exhibition. If you’re in the area, we want you there. If you want to help us out, buy a Kinfolk T-shirt. We’re making a special batch just for this event (see below). And for all of you outside of Japan who have been wondering how to get a hold of some Kinfolk gear, here’s your chance.

For those of you who can’t join us in person, check out our web store at http://www.kinfolkstudios.bigcartel.com/products

In addition to T’s we’re gonna have posters, original art, and a few other surprises.

But mostly we thank you for the support you’ve already given us over the years. We couldn’t do any of the things we do without the support of our entire extended Kinfolk family. There’s a lot more to come, and we look forward to sharing it with all of you.”

Solid guys! Do not miss this opening. It’ll be an awesome time.

Cadence: Keyword

Dustin from Cadence posted an edited entitled “Keyword” that’s been around for at least two years. One of the Philly dudes showed it to me a while back and it features some old footage of PJ, Keo and Tom on his BMX as well as some vignette overlays of Dustin’s creative practice. Nicely done.

Hawk and a Rabbit

I had hopes of making another Day in 10 Photos post about my recent trip to see Jesse Gordon at Amillion Tattoo for another piece but alas, low light and blurry photos got the best of me. Yesterday I went to see Jesse to get a predatory tattoo. Something that would inspire me as I ride and in life in general. There’s something assertive about having the cycle of life inked on your skin. We finished up the line work and shading yesterday, with color coming up in a few weeks. While I’m bummed my digital shots didn’t come out, maybe my film camera caught the process better. Fingers crossed!

Support your cycling-friendly tattoo artists and tip well! Jesse’s been shafted before and that ain’t no way to support your community! Check out more photos at my Flickr.

Prolly is not Probably: Track End P

Since spending over 6 years of my life in NYC, I’ve gotten to meet a lot of great people. One of those souls is Chris Habib of Visitor Design. His catalog extends far beyond the art world and into the music industry as he’s worked with Sonic Youth and Boredoms extensively. Chris has always been one of my favorite people in New York and really embodies what I respect as an artist. Sure, he does some wacky stuff but he offers up a fresh perspective on how to define fine art.

A few weeks ago, I Tweeted that I needed a stencil-style logo. One that could be punched out of materials and embroidered simply. Chris immediately sent me a message on Twitter and my mouth salivated like a Pavlovian dog. This is what he sent me, a serif and track end “P” and I couldn’t be happier with it. Many thanks to Chris Habib! Be sure you check out his blog, Shelflife for some great and unconventional art.

Who We Are

This is a pretty rad concept. We’re all used to seeing each other on bikes but what do we do in our free time? I’d like to see this take place in NYC where most the young people on track bikes work at the world’s top design firms. I did however like the cinema vignettes. Beautifully shot.

“My aim was to document three people within Bournemouth’s fixed gear community focusing on their interests outside of this common ground that they share.”

Great job Michael!

Digging the branding of course. Get a helmet, pick up some merch or find out how you can help at H.E.L.L.
