Zaha Hadid and Suprematism: Galerie Gmurzynska in Zurich

I don’t post enough design or architecture here and I know I keep saying that I’ll make an effort to keep on top of it but sometimes it takes a special catalyst to drive the motivation. Take this recent Zaha Hadid and Suprematism installation at the Galerie Gmurzynska in Zurich. Hadid’s work has always struck me as ahead of her time. With her earliest drawings being some of the most beautiful hand-crafted pieces I’ve ever seen, once technology caught up with her design intent, it was only a matter of time until rendering became reality. In this exhibition her work is juxtaposed by early 20th century Russian post-constructionalist pieces. Amazing! It just needs more red and yellow!

Colle+McVoy for People for Bikes

While I resent their use of “hipster” in a otherwise very comprehensive presentation of Colle+McVoy‘s work for People for Bikes, I will commend Fast Co Design for pulling together such an informative post. Minneapolis has a great reputation for cycling and graphic design for that matter. Minneapolis-based Colle+McVoy did a great job on the ad campagin for People for Bikes, branching out of the fixed-gear-centric design dialog with these ad buttons. It doesn’t stop there either…

Kevin Scott’s Bendable Bike

Kevin Scott’s Bendable Bike

Sometimes, just sometimes, a concept bike piques my interest. This happens very infrequently as to many bikes create problems by attempting to solve a very simple one. That’s not saying this bike won’t create certain problems, but the intent and execution is really admirable. Kevin Scott’s bendable bike is certainly one worth noting. Union Foundry: Rotafixer T0001-0A

Joshua Kampa from Open Bicycle and Aaron Panone from Aarn Works Design have joined forces in Sommerville, Massachusetts under the guise of Union Foundry. They believe that elegant design serves as its own Raison d’être, or reason for being. This ideology is exemplified by their first project, the Rotafixer T0001-0A.

When I first received this painstakingly-designed packaging in the mail, I thought it was some sort of proprietary cog. After a minute, I figured it out and man, I’m impressed!

James Straffon for Paul Smith

James Straffon for Paul Smith

This is what I’m talking about!

Coinciding with the 97th Tour de France’s snaking journey across French mountains and vineyards, Paul Smith has again opened up his ‘art wall’ to cycling-inspired art. Last year he hosted a collection of photos from Rouleur magazine at his Heathrow Terminal 5 boutique; this year it’s the turn of London artist and cyclist James Straffon, curator of the online NÖ Gallery.

Straffon cites bicycle artist Taliah Lempert, as an inspiration, but his canvases go beyond the geometric shapes and abstract negative spaces enclosed by the bicycle frame and delves into the rich history and visual heritage of cycle sport. Brightly coloured caps display the logos and typography of hallowed sponsors Molteni, Brooklyn and Colnago; the acrylics and mixed media of the portraits series capture cyclings icons in familiar poses yet isolated, marooned mid-race in a flat acrylic ground. Also being shown are Straffon’s paintings of head-badges, the heraldic brands that adorn the front of classical bicycle marques.

‘I had already finalised a collection when the T5 wall project came into being,’ says Straffon, explaining how the opportunity to exhibit with Paul Smith, a well-known member of the tifosi came about. ‘I already knew of his love of cycling, and thought his eye for the “fine-grained” and idiosyncratic might view my work favourably.’
Let’s hope these pictures pop up in another context; it would be a shame if this summer the non-flying public miss out on these completely.

Text from Grafik Magazine‘s coverage. Some of the paintings remind me of the NÖ Gallery: Félix Potin Collection entry from not too long ago.

Mishka Presents: Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell Tonight

After the dudes at Mishka saw the Coop NagNagNag Violent Cavement art and header cards, they reached out to Coop to see if he’d want to put on a show at 350 Broadway in Brooklyn. Naturally Coop said “FUCK OFF” but after the guys paid him a ton of money and sold their souls, the LA-based artist obliged.

Tonight at 350 Broadway, Coop’s “Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell” show opens. He’ll be there, I’ll be there and there will be two special NagNagNag x Мишка Boryoku Genjin Raw Power Version +3s available for purchase through a raffle.

A Saturday Night Round-Table

While most people were out crammed in bars or clubs spending their Saturday night out and about, I was in a secret location with a few talented artists. At first, this was going to be A Day in 10 Photos post, but the content was time-sensitive and I had to wait until today to post it.

Dutch Profiles: Rem Koolhaas’ Architecture

You can’t go through the first semester in any Architecture program without studying the work of Rem Koolhaas. The Office for Metropolitan Architecture has created so-called, “critical architecture” for decades and has inspired many young designers over the years.

Check out this in-depth profile on the man himself! It’s a great way to spend 10 minutes.
