Caught this at the 14 Bike Co blog just now. It’s funny how a simple idea like this hasn’t really been done before. Someone on the London Fixed Gear Single Speed forum’s dad makes wallpaper. His dad also rides track bikes. So you can see where the overlap came from. Pretty rad! Check out more info at the LFGSS forums.

Mishka in Ollie Magazine
Photos by Eisuke Sekiguchi
Mishka‘s ( @MishkaNYC ) got a big spread in the new Ollie Magazine. There’s two pages with Marco and me riding in Harajuku and another two on the new shop in Tokyo. Really stoked on the way the store came out and the photos look great. Check the other pages out below.

Rebel 8: Live from Amsterdam
Mike Giant’s over in Amsterdam at the moment and while he’s there, he’s leaving his mark at the Mediamatic Bank. Ride bikes is right! Check out more of his photos at the Rebel 8 blog. I wonder if that bar Gollum is still there?

What is a Nag Nag Nag?
Everyone’s been asking me what a “Nag Nag Nag” is. They’ve probably seen the random Twitter rantings between Lamour Supreme, Greg Mishka and me. It’s mostly a joke at this point but Nag Nag Nags do exist. In fact, I got one in the mail today.
I unmask the mystery below. It’s not what you think….

Aarn Works Design and Quiros Cycles
Wow. Perfect timing. I’m glad I posted up Armando’s bike today so I had some context for everyone when seeing this project. Aarn Works Design in Boston teamed up with Quiros Cycles to make a nice headbadge for Armando’s frames. The finished project came out slick but you already knew that. Congrats to both parties on a job well done. Aarn, how hard would it be to make a Viking badge? Hrmmm….

Top Chumps: Fixed Gear Scenester
I’d say the only thing more pretentious and banal than the actual inspiration for pieces like this are the actual illustrations themselves. But hey, that’s the name of the game I suppose. The latest scene report from UK art gurus Yep We Can comes in a little expired if you ask me. Sure, the “art collective” title is well deserved but really?

Funeral French: Gorilla Skull Prints
To keep with the theme of the last post, here’s a new offering by one of my favorite artists, French. There’s something about his work that is so raw and refreshing at the same time. Simplicity through heavy detailing, if that makes sense. Every few months, he does a small run of prints. This time he’s offering his Gorilla Skull illustration for about $50 USD shipped. If you wanna grab one, roll on over to his blog and pick it up but act fast because he’s only got two artist proofs and I bought one already!
I’m still bummed I missed out on the Goat Head print!

Ex Libris Mr. Fixtus Reaper
A Journey Round My Skull has a series of bookplates from the collection of Richard Sica. Can you guess which one I liked? You see, even people in the old days knew that fixed gears would be out and penny farthings would be in.

NÖ Gallery: Félix Potin Collection
A reader forwarded me a link to the NÖ Gallery page on their Félix Potin Collection. His work is absolutely amazing and for some reason, I picked one of the simpler paintings to post. It’s probably partially due to the black Campagnolo hat I’ve had for a few years now that I just can’t bring myself to throw away. Maybe you’ll find something nostalgic in the collection.

Transient Messenger Bags: Cache’ Collaboration Bag
Transient Messenger Bags collaborated with a very special artist on a messenger bag. Cache’ is a well-known and well-respected artist out of LA. He wrenches at Orange 20 and paints giant chickens in his spare time. If you’ve been to LA and visited Orange 20, you’ll recognize his work on the side of the building. Usually artist collaboration bags come out a little lack-lustre, but this one came out so rad!
Alex at Transient will be donating this bag to the MayDay Alleycat in Philly.

Chainvetica
Here’s yet another gear-calculating app for the iPhone. Chainvetica is exactly what you’d expect, a gear-inch-mph calculating app in Helvetica. Simple and sweet. From the Apple Store’s description:
Chainvetica does the math your PBR addled brain cannot. Given the tooth count of your chainring and cog, it calculates gear inches — an ancient formula designed to sum up just how hard it’s going to be turn over the cranks on your fixed gear. The more inches you’re running, the harder it is to push. Use it to pick your cog. Use it to quantify the power of your massive quads.
As an added bonus, Chainvetica also calculates your speed at a cadence of 90 rpm. Your skinny jeans will make 90 rpm exactly “as fast as you can pedal” so basically, this app also calculates your ride’s top speed without all the bourgeois cables and stuff.
All this functionality presented on a bed of orange and Helvetica. Good stuff.

14 Bike Co. New Super Ted Logo
Ted was telling me about this when he was in NYC last Winter. He kept saying he wanted to integrate a skull, a mustache and some tools. Looks like he finally nailed down a design. Fixed Gear London and 14 Bike Co. both had the scoop today.
It came out great Ted!

Skitch Clothing: The Revival II Mock-Up
A School Project (The Revival II) from Skitch Clothing on Vimeo.
For one of his design classes, Tom Briggs, of Skitch Clothing made a mock-up type treatment for the theoretical sequel to the Revival. This is in no way a trailer for a second project. It was just for a class!
What I was most impressed with was the actual type treatment and the design process. Tom built the letter out of cardboard and set them up in a parking garage. I’ve posted his final project poster design and some process photos below.

London 2012 Olympic Games: Cycling
Transport for London, in conjunction with the 2012 Olympics has issued a series of proposed posters, each representing one of the events. Here’s the cycling poster and the graphic design looks spot-on. I like it a lot better than the official 2012 Track Racing graphic, that’s for sure.

Archinect ShowCase: Vakko Fashion Center & Power Media Center
World-wide economic slumps turn into abandoned projects and sometimes those abandoned projects become the framework for a new program. That’s the case with the recently-completed Vakko Fashion Center & Power Media Center in Istanbul. The project was designed by REX, a local office that grew as an off-shoot from OMA a few years ago. (The name of the firm was quite controversial when it was first announced, translated from Latin meaning “King”). As part of Archinect‘s ongoing ShowCase series, they’ve got an exclusive look into the recently-completed project, filled with kaleidoscope-esque interiors, structural diagrams, partiis and other examples of REX’s true architectural prowess.
Make sure you head over and check it out. It’s really quite amazing!

Ken’ichi Otani Architects: House in Matsubara
With all the jokes going around, it’s time for some design. It’s been a while since I posted about Architecture, mostly because I haven’t really seen a whole lot lately that makes me swoon. This project just popped up on my Reader and it’s worth the repost. Ken’ichi Otani Architects designed the House in Matsubara with a banking facade that’s carved out in order to engage the interior spaces.
