Prestine Fixed Gear Gallery Event

Before you say it, no, the XXX does not refer to XXX-rated. In Amserdam, there are these bollards all over the city with XXX on them, referring to the coat of arms and flag of Amsterdam.

The Fixed Fixed Fixed opening event was last Saturday in Amsterdam at the Prestine Fixed Gear Shop. The show features work from the artist Jasper Faber of U-Turn / 180 Amsterdam. I’m not sure how long it will be open for, but if you’re in the Netherlands, be sure to head over to Prestine and check out their new store!

Sprocket Rockets Recap

Superb Bicycle in Boston just upped a little recap from their Sprocket Rockets opening party. The opening was curated by Meighan O’Toole and featured the work of Simon Peplow. If you missed out on the show, you can pick up a copy of The Ride Journal for a two-page spread of Simon’s work, or head over to Superb and check it out. It’ll be up until January 8th. They’ve also got a limited run of shirts in the making, so be sure to check the design out at their blog.

Gunung Ankle Band

Gunung Ankle Band

Some people use a binder clip, some just roll their pant leg up and some would rather have a strap that keeps their pants out of their drivetrain while riding their bike. Gunung straps are a handmade product out of Japan that do just that. More information below.

Life Needs No Brakes

I know you’ve seen this, but I can’t get enough of reflective clothing. This shirt from Fixie Shirt sends out the call to the urban fixed gear riders worldwide saying “Life Needs No Brakes”. Here’s the description from Fixie Shirt:

Let’s glow in the dark! We want to offer handlebar freaks a possibility to make themselves visible in aggressive urban traffic without having to look like a Christmas tree.
All t-shirts are produced by labels known for their high standards quality of materials and a care for the environment.

Doored

I just saw this short animation called “Doored” over at Urban Velo and felt like it needed a repost. So spread the word; send it to your family, friends and co-workers. Let them know how easy it is to prevent dooring a cyclist. In other countries, drivers are taught to open their doors with their opposite hand, forcing them to look out the window into traffic for cyclists and other drivers. I’ve started opening doors that way and it’s a really simple method to ensure the safety of those around you.

Really like the video. It was also shot on my new block oddly enough. Typical narrow-Brooklyn street with cars parked on either side. Leaving about 3 feet or so of 100% door-free safety. Sketchy!

Geoff McFetridge Ruegamer Project

Geoff McFetridge Ruegamer Project

With feather-light bike builds often clad in an all-black empirical cloak, it’s nice to see a small independent artist take hold of the color-palette. Cue Geoff McFetridge. He’s by no means as high profile as Shepard Fairey or Damien Hirst and this Rue Sports frame isn’t going to fetch over a $500,000 dollars at a LiveSTRONG auction, but Jesus, this project came out awesome!

I’ve long been a fan of McFetridge’s work and this is one of the best collaboration builds I’ve seen.

Kahn’s Exeter – Short Film by Alex Roman

This puts things in perspective. Albeit a 3d computer-generated perspective, but still. Louis Kahn’s Exeter Library is one of those projects you diagram at least 100 times for Arch history, studio and other classes while in Architecture school. Alex Roman’s recent animation captures the one thing Kahn was going for; space is potent.

Details below:

CG Shortfilm about Louis Kahn’s Phillips Exeter Academy Library.

Footage from “The Third & The Seventh” project for illustrating Mundos Digitales 2009 conference.

Done with 3dsmax, Vray, AE and Premiere.

Main theme soundtrack it’s The Divine Comedy’s “Laika’s Theme” from “Absent Friends” album.

Anzen Saddle – Mondrian

Blue Lug has finally put this saddle online. For a while it was an in-store exclusive. I saw it in the shop when I was there visiting and the architecture geek in me immediately wanted it. Mondrian was one of the most famous Dutch artists of the 20th Century who was a contributing hand in the De Stijl movement. His grid-like compositions influenced all artistic medians. Architecture, graphic and even furniture design to this day look at Mondrian for his simple takes on form, space and order.

This saddle would go perfectly with your LOOK Mondrian frameset, because I know all of you have one of those.
