GOOD Obesity and Cycling Illustration

Obesity is a major problem in the US. With the modern-day cycling boom in ever-increasing strength, is it safe to say that commuting by bicycle could change these statistics?

GOOD magazine, along with Lamosca, has designed a wonderful info-graphic that addresses this question.

The average American is both overweight and spends more than 100 hours per year commuting, that vast majority of those hours being spent in a car. Are those numbers correlated? Could we help reduce our societal weight gain by encouraging more commutes by bike or foot? Our latest Transparency is a look at the number of active commutes in several countries, as compared to those countries obesity rates.

Bike Wrap by Jooks

Bike Wrap by Jooks

BIKE WRAP made by Jooks from STEADFAST on Vimeo.

Jooks in Hokkaido, Japan designed a foldable soft-case for traveling with your bike. At the CMWC everyone was rolling around on the last day with cardboard boxes. Not only did you have to locate one, but the cardboard would rip when you were packing your bike. Looked like a pain. I was using my Sunlite case, which is massive, making it hard to cart around. The Bike Wrap looks like a really good solution to traveling with your bike. The padded sides provide protection and it’s simple enough to assemble.

Nice video too!

If you want to pick one up, they’ll have a booth at the Tokyo Bicycle Film Festival. Checkem out! Maybe someone in the states will stock them.

No HST on Bikes in BC

No HST on Bikes in BC

If you’re in British Columbia and are opposed to the new 7% tax on bicycles, head over here and sign this petition.

To give you some more background:

Visit a Victoria bike store like Recyclistas and you’ll hear how many view this issue.

“[The HST] is kind of frustrating”, said Luke Postl of Recyclistas, “especially with things like helmets. Helmets are already a huge chunk of money for some people. You have to wear them, or you get a fine, and now the cost is going up. The cost is going up on other accessories too — oil and grease, patch kits, reflective stickers and locks. All of that was PST-exempt. I’m against the HST. I think it will alienate a lot of people from riding. It’s added a cost that is too much. The cost of living is already exorbitant, and the minimum wage isn’t going up.”

PUYL

PUYL

Fixed gear riders like simplicity. They like “clean bikes” with no brake holes, no water bottle mounts and no fender mounts. It’s limiting for most because while they enjoy riding their bikes, they don’t always enjoy carrying bags around. Every bicycle accessory has to be fit onto the bike somehow and easy to remove for locking the bike up outside. Maybe that was the inspiration for this multi-purpose tool.

The PUYL is a pump and light all in one. It mounts to the top tube and supplies LED lights by saving energy that’s generated from the pump’s use. More information:

The generated energy is stored in a rechargeable battery/ super cap. The light source is an ultra bright LED bulb. The magnetic recharge method allows the LED light to be recharged unlimited times.

The criteria for the object required it to be eco friendly and reduce the number of items the user had to carry around.

A patent pending is submitted for this project.

Well done guys! Intelligent and eco-friendly design! Not to mention the Shop 14 plug!

Dicky Graham Childism

Dicky Graham Childism

Dicky Graham in a nutshell is an artist hat uses found objects to make sculptures of animals. The snail sculpture above seemed relevant to post. His website goes into further detail:

Using a combination of found utensils and apparatus to create his works, Dicky Graham recreates a family of animals that peer through eyes of light bulbs, that pull tongues with the finger tips of red gloves and walk along with the keys of old piano’s. His Character-filled works nod to Marcel Duchamp’s ready-mades and also reveal the idiosyncrasies of objects in our everyday lives through their imperceptible and overlooked details. As 1917 magazine The Blind Man established: ‘Whether Mr Mutt with his own hands made the fountain or not has no importance… He took an ordinary article of life… created a new thought for that object.’

Thanks Zack!

My Office is Moving

My architecture office is moving. It’s kind of sad, I’ve been working here for 3 years and we’ve been in this space for over 10. Everything is packed up and ready to be moved a few blocks away. Going to miss the huge arched windows and all the natural light. Spaces like this in NYC are quickly becoming too expensive for smaller companies to afford. Such a shame!

French: Blood Oath

This is one of those moments where I wish I had money to drop on art. Granted £70.00 isn’t a lot of money, but it’s more than I have to spend right now.

French’s latest opening, Blood Oath is up at Archipelago Works in Sheffield. The gallery is selling limited prints from the show, either unframed or framed for £70.00 – £85.00. 50 x 70cm 1-colour screenprint on 250gsm. Check out the rest of the prints here.

I bought his Tree Boar print back at the Cursed Scrolls exhibition for around the same price.

So nice.
