I’ve come to really love this climb. It’s short, sweet and pending traffic, isn’t that far from San Francisco. Mt. Diablo can be heaven or hell, depending on the weather. Get on it early enough, as the sun is rising and you’ll be descending just in time for the heat to set in. Get on it later than ten or eleven in the morning and you’re in for a scorcher. After climbing up to the KOM during the ATOC this year (that story is still coming), I told myself I’d make it up every time I visit SF.

The Monday after The Ends photo show, I rallied Lyle and Evan from Mission Workshop and Marc Marino to hit the climb early. It was the first time I had taken the North Gate road and I think we saw three cars total that day, along with only a handful of riders. At the top, “the Devil’s elbow” awaits, a steep ramp up to the ranger station. Once there, we had a Coke, a chat and talked about how we’d head back down. After a roundabout way back to our vehicles, we had totalled around 37 miles and 3,900′ of climbing. Next time I’m taking the trails down!

This is the seventh layout of the 2013 PiNP Calendar, entitled “#SeekTheDevil”. The camera, lens used and location are noted on the bottom left of the document.

Fabled to be the point of creative by local Native American tribes, Mt. Diablo offers the San Francisco Bay Area-riders some much needed elevation to get their blood boiling, literally. This  3,864 feet (1,178 m) mountain is visible from SF, as well as most of northern California and while it’s nothing when compared to the southern California mountain tops, Diablo can deliver some scorching temperatures in the spring and summer months. Try it out on for size next time you’re in SF. #SeekTheDevil.

“Plenty of Action But No Control” is right. I’m off the bike for a few days after taking a spill on my MTB. Hey, not everyone can have the bike control of Ty. Anyway, if you haven’t noticed, it’s the weekend. That means you better be hitting the roads, trails, dirt, springs and bourbon. Thanks for the inspiration Kyle!

Exactly one week ago, I was in Santa Cruz shooting photos of Keith Bontrager. While I was documenting his daily life, James from Adventure Refugee was shooting video. What he captured that day, along with the live feed from the Ask a Founder event at Mission Workshop will lead up to a full-length showcasing the living legacy that is Keith Bontrager.

These days, I rarely put up A Day in 10 Photos posts anymore and to be completely honest, it’s not intentional. The way I choose to document for the site has changed in the past few years, focusing more on Shop Visits, Beautiful Bicycles and other randomness. Today however just fit right in perfectly with the old ADi10P format.

The stage: a fraction of the many trails in Santa Cruz. With the idea of an early start out the window, we settled for an early afternoon shred fest. The people, Ibis Cycles, Strawfoot and Brian Vernor. Check out 10 narrated photos below and don’t worry, I shot plenty of photos of that Hunter

While I was in California last month, I worked on a few pieces for the Rapha blog, loosely-related to the Amgen Tour of California, with emphasis on loosely. You’re not going to see any pain face pros, just Regular Riders who we met along our trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco. There’s more on the way, but here’s the first edition of Cali is Not California™!

After a hefty processing and scanning bill, I finally have all of my 2013 ATOC photos. For me, one of the benefits of shooting from the hip with a 35mm camera is catching moments like this and not knowing how they’ll turn out. End of roll / end of road, coming down Mt. Diablo with Garrett, Jeremy and Julie. I’m just bummed the next exposure didn’t make the cut!

So as you can tell, there hasn’t been much coverage from the ATOC. Instead of following the race each day, we’ve been riding in the cities that are hosting the race. Today, we woke up and hit Gibraltar. Or rather, Gibraltar hit us. It was amazing and there will be more details once my film gets developed. For now, this iPhone photo looks mad decent.

Over the next few months, I’ll be spending more time on the road than I will in Austin and it all begins today with Los Angeles for the Amgen Tour of California. Last year, I was in LA and SF almost as much as I was in ATX. This summer, it’ll be even more.

My Photo Show at the Rapha Cycle Club SF

This weekend kicks off the 2013 Amgen Tour of California and to get everyone in spirits for the event, I’m having a photo show at the Rapha Cycle Club SF. The show is being hung tomorrow (Saturday, May 11th) and will be up all week. Then, come Sunday, May 19th, we’re throwing an all-day “opening party” event.

So if you’re in SF next weekend, come down Sunday and say hi.

I’ll be covering the 2013 ATOC again this year, but a little differently, so stay tuned!

\The Lost New Road

Late last summer, a group of cyclists got together in Northern California with Giro to try out their New Road cycling line. While there, I was told to not worry about shooting photos but I still did. Some of which made it to their ad campaign, others made it into my hoard drive where they sat for months.

With the New Road line out now, I can post these and what better time than a Friday afternoon. I’m back in Cali on Monday and I can’t wait, especially after looking through these photos again.

Do the Cyclists in California a Favor

As much as I’ve been posting about various interviews with myself this week on the site, I can assure you that I want the content here on PiNP to support cyclists and companies. One of those ways we can all come together to help cyclists in California and beyond is by supporting the three foot law. That’s 36″, or approximately a meter. That’s space that can save lives. Think about it, the average opening to your home is 36″… it’s a meager request. If this passes in California, it’s a great benchmark for other states. I know Texas needs this too!
