Every year, when autumn rolls around, cyclocross invades this blog. Road racing is done for the year, forcing the Manual for Speed crew out into muddy grass with their Mamiya 7’s loaded and jokes cracking. At least that’s how it went down at this year’s Cross Vegas. Emiliano Granado is quite the photographer but an even better heckler. Check out his mid-heckling photography in this clever Guest Gallery.

In Stock: Highway 39 Prints
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be offering high-resolution, professionally printed and packed photographic prints through the new PiNP Web Shop. The first in the series is entitled Highway 39. This winding road is found in the Angeles National Forest, en route to Cloud Burst off Highway 2. This was shot using Neopan 400, so expect lots of God grain.
An 11×16 print on glossy paper will run you $35 shipped in the continental USA.
Because of the delicate nature of photographic prints, I will only be shipping this batch to the USA. If you would like one internationally, please contact me for pricing.

2012 Texas Toast Jam Progress
Sure, it may look like a bunch of dudes, standing around, looking at some plywood but those are the most capable ramp builders west of the Mississippi. The crew is already cracking away at the 2012 Texas Toast Jam course. With the dirt already getting shaped and the ramps underway, you can expect it to be bigger and better than last year. I’ve seen the sketches for some of the course and its insanity.
Last week I swung by to see the guys. While I was checking in on their progress, I shot some photos with the Hasselblad. Check ’em out! And if you missed out on my photos from last year, see them here and my Recent Roll photos here.

Princeton Architectural Press has published a book called Instant: The Story of Polaroid. I know plenty of film buffs read this site, so I thought I’d share.

Poler Stuff: Bicycle Camping in Texas
Earlier this year, Jon, Ross and I took off on a 120 mile ride out to Colorado Bend State Park here in Texas for a weekend of camping. Poler sent along some goods and I shot some photos, many of which have just now made it onto the Poler site. Head on over and check them out! And if you missed the original Recent Roll post, check it out here.

Omar the Barber and Vinny’s Barbershop
I have met a lot of interesting people on the road. All through bikes. People from all walks of life, with various careers, personalities and ambitions. Sometimes those people become good friends. And that’s how Omar and I became friends. What started as a haircut, led to drinking, then more drinking, some karaoke, bad tattoos (have we even ridden yet man?) and finally, another haircut. Vinny’s Barbershop is my go-to spot for a trim when I’m in LA and it’s not just because Omar knows how to take 20+ years off with an hour-long session…

LA Life
If I were forced to move anywhere in the USA tomorrow, It’d be LA. Now saying that, I have to admit, I dislike 75% of the “city” but that 25% is mighty tempting and it’s that percentage that brings me back every few months. Last month, I was actually in town for the Mishka LA opening but managed to sneak in some time on the bike, in the bar and at Golden Saddle Cyclery. Even though I was only there for a few days, I had my fill until next time…

Recent Roll: Mt. Disappointment
I love riding in LA. Well, not so much in Los Angeles as the Angeles National Forest. It’s home to the biggest climb in the continental United States (the Crest) and the routes you can take are limitless. From Cloud Burst, to Baldy and Mt. Wilson, meandering through the mountains is where I like to be when I visit LA.
So when Kyle asked me where I wanted to go the last time I was in LA, I told him that I didn’t care. His answer: Mt. Wilson and then Mt. Disappointment. I was game, as was Christian, one of Woody, Ty and Kyle’s employees. It was his first ride ever. While he didn’t go in for the haul up to Mt. Disappointment, he stuck his way up to the top of Mt. Wilson. Our day totalled around 65 miles and over 7,200′ of climbing. It was a blast!

Argonaut Ride
I didn’t get to spend much time on the road bike while in Portland, but one of the two rides I did was with Ben from Argonaut Cycles, Kyle from Chris King, Souphorse and some fellas from the Jens Voigt Army who have been testing custom Argonaut Frames. We left from Portland and rode to Hood River. I borrowed Billy’s Raleigh Record Ace and we headed out towards Mt. Hood.
The route is arguably one of Oregon’s finest, hitting local favorites like Bull Run, Little Switzerland, and Lolo pass.
We concluded at a carbon fiber facility just north of Hood River, where Ben from Argonaut has been working on custom carbon frames. There’s more to this story developing, so sit tight, but for now, check out the photos below.

Brenton is pretty much the man when it comes to shooting FGFS action with film. Need proof? How’s this photo of Devin hitting a tire grab? Connection made, on film. That’s skill on both sides of the lens.

The 2012 Rapha NW Gentlemen’s Race
Shooting races with a 5D is easy compared to shooting with a Hasselblad. I finally got all my rolls developed from the 2012 Rapha NW Gentlemen’s Race and I’m very stoked on how they came out. This was the first real event I photographed with a medium format camera and it won’t be the last. Some of these came out incredible. For more information on the race, check out my last post on it for the rest of the photos, check out full photo set below.

Back in Austin for 7 Hours
I get back to Austin tonight, after a great time in Portland, only to take right off for LA for a few days. When I travel this much, I really miss the riding Austin has to offer. That and the character of the roads. The things you see on the daily are so stereotypical Texan (and American) that it’s a never-ending source for amusement.
Once I gather my thoughts, more coverage from Portland will commence, partially mixed in with tons of LA photos (again).
Enjoy your life, friends and the weekend.

If you can’t tell, I’ve been relaxing in Portland with the lady. We’ve spent a great deal of time outside the city (isn’t that why people move here?) and it’s been great. This Recent Roll is dedicated to those #NatureVibes…

Regular Riders 01
I’ve been shooting a lot of portraits with the Hasselblad recently because, well, it’s damn good for them. The hardest thing about portrait photography is getting people to just relax and look natural, so I started with my friends. Here’s a quick look at some recent portraits I like to call “Regular Riders”. These people are some good friends and they just love to ride. It’s a work in progress and I’m already learning a lot about shooting with this camera. If you see anything you can critique, please do so! Or if you like a particular one, let me know.
