New Changes to Social Media for 2015

New Changes to Social Media for 2015

You might have caught wind of this already, but this morning, I switched over from the @JohnProlly handle to @theRadavist. If you were previously following @JohnProlly on Instagram and Twitter, it’s already switched to @theRadavist. If you want to follow my personal accounts on Instagram and Twitter, do so at @JohnProlly.

My reasoning was I would be able to showcase more of the contributor’s work, allow “take-overs” during events and most importantly, grow the community surrounding the site. There are a lot of big projects in the works this year and I can’t wait to share them with you, not just through my lens, but through other’s as well.

Happy New Year.

On my last day in Los Angeles, Sean from Team Dream and I sat in his living room, listening to the rain dump outside. Normally, a little rain doesn’t bother me, but this was torrential. You’ve heard the expression “raining cats and dogs”, right? Well this was all cats. Their claws hitting the tin awning outside Sean’s guestroom as visibility dropped to inches and the trees swayed in the wind. Dogs wouldn’t cause this much damage. It fell and fell and fell.

Los Angeles needs it.

Escaping Black Friday with Bicycle Camping, Bourbon and Black Coffee

Escaping Black Friday with Bicycle Camping, Bourbon and Black Coffee

For the past two years, a few guys from Beat the Clock Cycling have taken to the open roads the morning after Thanksgiving to escape Turkey-snacking and Black Friday madness. This time of year is when we get in our camping trips. It’s not 100º out and the only worrisome factors are the sudden cold fronts that blow in and yeah, the horrible headwinds that make trekking southbound unbearable.

Still, knowing we might face rain and 30+ mph headwinds, a few of us loaded up our TT bikes (tent time bikes) and glanced over Nick’s route through Texas Hill Country. On the agenda: Pedernales State Park and Guadalupe River State Park, the former of which, none of us had ever been to.

I Just Wanted to Thank You

This always comes across as cheesy, but I really do want to thank the readers of this site. We work hard over here to keep things positive and we really try to do our best at representing what the Radavist means to us and most of all, the importance of having fun on your bike.

It’s easy to be negative in the comments and thankfully, most of you keep it civil with appropriate discourse. While it’s not always easy running things over here, it’s worth while and we’re all very grateful for the community that exists on the site.

So yeah, it’s cheesy but thank you!

Where Did Summer Go?

I’ve been trying to pull together a Gallery from all of the summer road trips (and rolls of film) shot this year, but am waiting for the weather to get much worse. Although, it seems everyone’s dealing with record lows.

Regardless, looking at photos like this make me miss sun burns and late sunsets…

Tools of the trade:
Mamiya 7ii / 80mm
Kodak Porta 400

Those TCB Cyclocross Kits Look Awesome!

Photos by John Daniel Reiss

In the world of cyclocross team kits, you can go a few directions. First of which being the standard issue (and most common), three or four colored panels and a bunch of sponsor logos with a pixelated team graphic. Second, you can go just plain crazy. All-over animals, cupcakes, donuts, cats, pandas, whatever. The brighter the better, more is more, instead of less is more.

From the looks of the new TCB Cyclocross kit, they went the third route: classy, with just the right amount of logos and clearly inspired by Cali surf style of the 1980’s. Now, if they only all piled into a Datsun to get to the races. Ok, or a YOTA.

The Radavist 2014 Calendar: November

This is the eleventh layout of the Radavist 2014 Calendar, entitled “Take the High Road”. The camera and location are noted on the bottom left of the document.

After all the manure, cattle grates, and potential stampeding you on your ride, cows are good for at least one thing: making ribbon-like singletrack along the sides of country roads. Fun to ride on any bike. Apologies for this one being late!

An Afternoon in Santa Cruz with Keith Bontrager

Last summer, after Keith Bontrager spoke at Mission Workshop, I got to spend a few hours with him back in his home town of Santa Cruz, California. The intention was pretty simple, gather some ‘lifestyle’ photos for Trek and Bontrager to use in ads, magazines and their photo annual book.

Our trip from Vegas to Austin in my pickup truck was a blur, except for moments like this. Oh and Sedona. Sedona was rad. Anyway… The thing that sucks about traveling by car is that you never want to stop when you see a great road. After 13 hours of driving that day, we definitely stopped for this one…

Good Things Don’t Change at Mercian Cycles – Jim Holland

Good Things Don’t Change at Mercian Cycles
Photos and words by Jim Holland

Sometimes good things don’t change, Mercian Cycles is one of those things.

The current workshop has sat in the same spot since 1965, watching as modern industrial buildings crop up around it and other older workshops disappear. Underneath the steeped, church like ceiling, little has changed and the intermittent clang of tubes and scraping of files ring out as they have done for the last 50 years whilst one by one, men make bicycles by hand.

Frames are still brazed free hand on an open hearth, as they have been since day one, amongst the very last practitioners of this method, Mercian believes it to be gentler on the tubes, which contributes to the longevity of the frame. Die hard Reynolds stalwarts, they don’t often stray from Birmingham steel and have a good stock of 531 for the true nostalgist.

One of just a handful of England’s traditional shop based builders that remain, the torches are still firing brightly and the benches are seldom dormant as the orders keep pouring in, one of them mine, I’m counting the days.

The Road to the 2014 NACCC – John Daniel Reiss

The Road to the 2014 NACCC
Words and Photos by John Daniel Reiss

The Road to NACCCs was not paved in gold. It was mostly laid out with cheap beer and great friends. For the 2014 North American Cycle Courier Championship organizers in Minneapolis and Chicago concocted an elaborate plan that spanned several hundred miles and two weekends. Starting with the Cuttin’ Crew Classic, an annual race that celebrates the local hustle of the Chicago messenger, many out-of-towners showed up for a piece of the action. Still hanging on to summer, we were blessed by the cool water of Lake Michigan and soaked by afternoon showers. My compatriots at TCB Courier and myself found ourselves taking it all in, from the beautiful stone buildings to cutty alleys, the city was a great motivator the challenges ahead.
