It is with a heavy heart that we have to share the news that Max Kullaway from 333 Fab passed away after spending years fighting cancer. His wife posted on Facebook this morning announcing the sad news. We’d like to extend warm thoughts and love to all who knew Max and to all of his customers, his legacy now lives with you. Ride in peace, buddy.

Shaving an impressive 1kg off the total build weight when compared to their traditional steel framesets, Brompton announced today the Superlight, a made from titanium. These frames feature a titanium fork, rear swingarm, while keeping the steel main frame for stability and frame stiffness. The Superlight come in three build kits, including a 2-speed build kit in their new “Cloud Blue” color and topped off with a Brooks saddle ($2,330). Johnstown, Pennsylvania’s Center for Metal Arts is holding a framebuilding class, lead by Moth Attack‘s Megan Dean in October:

This course is designed to walk someone without metalworking experience through the process of fitting and brazing a bicycle frame together with an emphasis on hand tools. We will start at design and work our way through to a completed frame ready for paint. You will have the option to build a Track, Road, Gravel, Cyclocross, or a Mountain bike frame (you will want parts and tires in person for this option) and decide prior to the start of class. Lugged or fillet brazed construction is an option and will be design-dependent. This course will be a great start to picking up a torch and learning the basics of what it takes to build your own frame with something to ride when you’re done!

Today’s Readers’ Rides is going to stoke a lot of you out. Chris sent in his Kruch “All-Country” Drop Bar 29er and it’s a real looker, so let’s jump right in!

I can’t say that the possibility of a custom balance bike persuaded me personally to have a kid (let’s give hormones that honour), but having been together many years, I feel confident stating that it was in the pro column for Gavin. As I sat on the sofa, snacks resting precariously on my growing stomach, Gavin would wax lyrical about ideas he had for the small person’s first balance bike, with me nodding sagely but honestly, not listening. There were screengrabs, blackboard diagrams and long waffling trains of thought. Then, parts started arriving at the workshop and not for August Bicycles customers.

One of the most interesting parts of Speedvagen is seeing how individuals can bring their own riding style, perspectives, and ideas to the brand and push us in new directions.

Think back to Sacha and the Urban Racer. Richard and the GTFO, Glenn and the AFF, and now Bradford and his baby the Speedvagen Custom Rando.

Last summer early in the pandemic we hired Bradford Smith to build frames. While that was a crazy time to start new, he’s taking to the role exceptionally well and has been a staple in developing new ideas. His excitement for bike and riding is unlike anyone we have ever seen.

Bradford’s riding style is just different than that of an average cyclist and he thrives in the Ultra Endurance category and cyclocross, a strange mixture on opposite ends of the spectrum. Brad is known to do some pretty wild rides like completing 1200 Km (750 miles) Paris-Brest-Paris in 48hours of moving time. Finishing the Trans America bike race in 11th place and many more long-distance adventures.

The Rando is his influence and thoughts on how a bike should ride, combined with all of classic SV signature touches, seat stays, geo, materials, technology, and style.
