Cycling Tips: Thereabouts

Is it wrong to think that there aren’t many pros who would do something like this? Or at least, we wouldn’t read about it. This story is so good:

“It’s easy to get wrapped up in the details when it comes to cycling. Distances, wattages, victories and other measures often lead us to forget the simply joy of riding a bike. Brothers Gus and Lachlan Morton (yes, the one who races with WorldTour team Garmin-Sharp), got back to basics in an attempt to recover the lost magic of the sport. This is their story about the 2500km journey from Port Macquarie to Uluru in just twelve days.”

Manual for Speed: American Criteriums

Did you know that Criterium racing began in the United States in the 1920’s, at a time when track racing was extremely popular throughout the country. The USA CRITS website refers to crit racing as “American Street Track Racing”? Or that “Criterium” is worth 13 points in Scrabble and 16 points in Words with Friends?

Head over to Manual for Speed to read more at their introduction to American Criteriums!

Manual for Speed Goes GIF at Vuelta al Pais Vasco

So… Manual for Speed realized one thing covering the Vuelta al Pais Vasco: photoz r overz. People just don’t have the patience these days, or the attention span to sit through a gallery anymore. They want motion. They want action but they don’t want videos. Because, videos are boring too.

What did MFS do? They made a GIF documentary and my favorite is the helicopter.

It’s wild, head over to MFS to check it out!

Tips from Tim Johnson’s Austin Cyclocross Clinic

It’s no secret that cyclocross is closer to MTB racing than it is road racing. The degree of separation between the two sports is often blurred, especially when compared to XC racing. In short: you’ve got to have bike control to excel at the sport. Sure fitness is one thing, but learning how to ride is key and tied directly to that is your position on a bike.

Tim Johnson is an advocate of the MTB position on a cross bike and on Saturday, he ran a clinic with Bicycle Sport Shop in preparation for the 2015 Cyclocross Nationals here in Austin.

There were three groups that day: A, B and C – depending on rider skill level. From there, Tim, with the help of two others, Johnny and Pete, broke down the basics of cyclocross racing. I hung around for the most important part: riding position… Read on in the gallery for a break-down of what Tim taught the clinic about how to race their cross bikes and check out some bullet points below.

Interview: Tim Johnson on the 2015 Cyclocross Nationals in Austin

Tim Johnson is one of the key figures in US cyclocross racing. He’s sponsored by Redbull, Mavic and races for Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com. He is charismatic, funny and dedicated to cyclocross. Today Tim held a cross clinic in Austin, TX – while he was in town to discuss the 2015 Cyclocross Nationals in Austin – and to check out Moto GP.

After shooting some photos at the clinic, I stopped Tim for a quick chat about the 2015 Cyclocross Nationals in Austin. Check that out below!

The Radavist 2014 Calendar: April

This is the fourth layout of the Radavist 2014 Calendar, entitled “Banquet of Champions”. The camera and location are noted on the bottom left of the document.

No one ever said bike racing was easy, especially the Rouge Roubaix. That event caused carnage across all fields and in doing so, brought out primitive survival instincts. The kind that tell you to keep pushing forwards because there’s an ice cold beverage waiting for you at the finish line.

Fi’zi:k: The Eloquence of Movement Project

Why is it that the raddest shoes are always the ones never slated for public consumption? Case in point: the Eloquence of Movement Project that Fi’zi:k is promoting.

A little backstory: 2014 is David Millar’s final season of professional racing. He wants to go out with a bang, raising money for a charity and exploring his career as a pro through a series of conceptual cycling shoes.

These shoes were designed by VCRC Style Council in partnership with Fi’zi:k and will be auctioned off for the Small Steps Project.

Each pair was hand made in Italy and are completely insane – like the Milano Sanremo editions pictured above.

Head over to Fi’zi:k to see what all is on the auction block.

Dan Chabanov and Manual for Speed: The Feed

So there’s this new sports nutrition service called the Feed. It’s actually kind of genius. You subscribe to a series of “boxes” that contain everything from hydration, to nutrition and recovery supplements. Either purchase their selection, or make your own. Then, each month, a box shows up at your door.

To keep things weird, Manual for Speed did a photoshoot with Dan Chabanov, showcasing his Pro Athlete box. Head over to Manual for Speed to see the in-depth report.

Side note: Both Manual for Speed and myself have boxes on the Feed.
